LAS ANIMAS COUNTY, Colo. (October 1, 2025) — Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officers are seeking information related to the illegal killing of multiple elk in Las Animas County. The carcasses were discovered abandoned near the Purgatoire River area south of Trinidad. CPW investigators believe the elk were killed sometime between September 26 and September 29.
Wildlife officers say at least three elk were shot and left to waste, in violation of state wildlife laws. A reward is being offered for information leading to the identification of those responsible.
Anyone with information is asked to call CPW’s Southeast Region office at 719-227-5200 or the Operation Game Thief hotline at 877-265-6648. Tips may be made anonymously, and rewards are available for credible information.
Poaching remains a serious offense in Colorado, carrying fines, jail time, and the potential for permanent suspension of hunting privileges under the state’s wildlife statutes and the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact.
