The 1960s television show “Lost in Space” featured Robot—a crew member who made decisions, handled threats, and operated equipment when humans could not. Elon Musk is building that capability for Mars at a million units per year.
Tesla ends Model S and Model X production second quarter 2026. The Fremont factory converts to manufacture Optimus humanoid robots. Musk announced the pivot January 28 during Tesla’s Q4 earnings call: “It’s time to bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge.” Production starts before year end. Public sales begin late 2027. Target price: $20,000 to $30,000.
Optimus stands 5’8″, weighs 57 kilograms, features 28 structural actuators. Hands provide up to 22 degrees of freedom for surgical precision. The 2.3 kWh battery delivers eight hours operation. Tesla adapted its Full Self-Driving computer for bipedal navigation—years of autonomous vehicle AI transferred to humanoid form.
Musk announced in March 2025 that Optimus would reach Mars in 2026 aboard SpaceX Starship rockets. Mars colonization requires construction crews working through radiation storms, mining in zero atmosphere, medical response when Earth is 140 million miles away. “Optimus will be an incredible surgeon,” Musk stated during Q3 earnings. The mission he calls “sustainable abundance” depends on autonomous agents, not remote-controlled machines.
Musk described Optimus V3, unveiling February or March: “It won’t even seem like a robot. It’ll seem like a person in a robot suit…so real that you’ll need to poke it to believe that it’s actually a robot.”
SpaceX’s timeline shows orbital refueling demonstration June 2026, uncrewed lunar landing June 2027, crewed missions September 2028. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman stated December 18 that NASA would go with “whichever lander was available first.” First one operational wins the pipeline: Artemis IV through VII, fuel depot operations, cargo missions, Mars base construction.
China’s Unitree sells its G1 humanoid for $16,000—undercutting Tesla’s target before Tesla ships. UBTECH plans 10,000 units annually by 2026 for automotive assembly lines. Boston Dynamics tests Atlas at Hyundai’s Georgia factory. But these focus on industrial automation—picking boxes, moving parts. Musk targets autonomous agents operating independently where human supervision isn’t available. The difference matters when the nearest human is 140 million miles away.
Tesla produced hundreds of Optimus units in 2025, not thousands initially targeted. In June 2025, program head Milan Kovac left. Tesla replaced him with Ashok Elluswamy from the autopilot team. Angel investor Jason Calacanis visited Tesla’s Optimus lab in January and told CES 2026 that V3 would be so revolutionary “people won’t remember that Tesla used to make cars.”
Musk claims Optimus alone will drive $10 trillion in revenue. Tesla’s current annual revenue: $80-100 billion. He stated September 2025 that “80%” of Tesla’s future value comes from Optimus and AI businesses. Tesla is investing $2 billion in Musk’s xAI for AI integration. Morgan Stanley predicts the humanoid robot industry reaches $5 trillion with one billion units by 2050, but that assumes automation of existing jobs. Musk’s vision creates work categories humans cannot perform: construction in vacuum, mining in extreme cold, operations during radiation events.
Musk outlined plans beyond Fremont’s initial line: Optimus 4 at 10 million units annually, Optimus 5 at 50 to 100 million. At that scale, robots handle Earth operations humans cannot: deep sea work, nuclear plant maintenance, disaster response. Tesla manufactures components in-house, building supply chains from scratch to meet specifications no existing supplier hits. The company identified hands and forearms as the hardest challenge—surgical dexterity in a form factor surviving Mars extremes.
The railroad barons of the 1860s controlled freight pricing and route access for decades by building first. Musk envisions the same for Mars. Control the robotic workforce that enables colonization, control who can afford to establish operations. The Mars infrastructure race determines who controls off-world economics for the next century. The terrestrial robot race determines who captures Morgan Stanley’s $5 trillion projection.
SpaceX dominates commercial launch. Tesla transformed electric vehicles from niche to mainstream. Starlink provides global satellite internet. The pattern: announce what seems impossible, execute, reshape industries. The richest man in the world just converted profitable automotive production to manufacture autonomous crew members for environments humans cannot survive. Robot from “Lost in Space” wasn’t a servant—it was the crew member who handled what humans could not. Musk is building a million per year while China ships cheaper alternatives and SpaceX’s Mars timeline slips. Infrastructure monopolies require infrastructure. Arriving first requires actually building it.
