The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group entered the Middle East on January 26 as President Trump warned Iran faces military strikes unless it abandons its nuclear program. The deployment positions the carrier within striking distance of Iranian territory as tensions surge over Tehran’s crackdown on nationwide protests.
US Central Command confirmed the arrival Monday. The Abraham Lincoln departed the South China Sea in a 10-day redeployment. Trump posted Wednesday that a “massive Armada” was heading to Iran, “ready, willing, and able to rapidly fulfill its mission, with speed and violence, if necessary.”
Trump’s ultimatum demands Iran end its nuclear program, cap ballistic missiles, and cut support for armed groups in Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, and Palestinian territories. He warned “the next attack will be far worse” than June 2025 US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio testified Tuesday that Trump “reserves the preemptive defensive option” if intelligence shows Iran preparing to strike US forces. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded that armed forces stand “prepared—with their fingers on the trigger” to respond to any aggression. Iran’s military spokesman said Thursday that US assets in the Gulf are “within the range of our medium-range missiles.”
European Union foreign ministers unanimously designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization Thursday, placing it in the same category as al-Qaeda and ISIS. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the move responds to Iran’s protest crackdown. “Any regime that kills thousands of its own people is working toward its own demise,” Kallas stated.
The death toll from Iran’s suppression of demonstrations remains disputed. The Human Rights Activists News Agency documents more than 6,100 killed. Time magazine cited Iranian health ministry officials claiming at least 30,000 dead.
France reversed its earlier opposition to support the designation Wednesday. The EU also sanctioned Iran’s Interior Minister, Prosecutor General, and 13 other officials.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the terrorist designation as “illegal, political and contrary to international law.”
The carrier deployment follows Trump’s January 3 operation that abducted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from Caracas. Rubio’s testimony confirms presidential authority for preemptive strikes. Trump justified June 2025 attacks by saying they “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear program. His current ultimatum threatens further strikes over Iran’s nuclear program.
